Green Arts NI
Supporting sustainability, climate awareness and greener practice across the arts sector in Northern Ireland.
Green Arts NI brings together artists, organisations and cultural partners who are committed to reducing environmental impact and supporting more sustainable ways of working across the arts.
At Theatre and Dance NI, we believe the arts have an important role to play in responding to the climate emergency through how work is made and delivered alongside ideas, conversations and leadership the sector can offer.
Our work in this area focuses on advocacy, partnership, resource-sharing and sector development, helping to support greener practice across theatre, dance and the wider arts landscape in Northern Ireland.
Our Commitment to Green Arts
TDNI has been actively engaged in environmental and sustainability work across the arts sector for a number of years.
Between 2018 and 2020, TDNI worked with partners including Theatre Forum and British Council Northern Ireland to support shared learning and practice around sustainability and climate action in the arts. This included contributing to all-island conversations and events designed to keep climate change and environmental responsibility on the agenda for the sector.
This work has continued to evolve through TDNI’s wider advocacy, partnerships and programming, with sustainability remaining an important part of how we support the future of theatre and dance in Northern Ireland.
Theatre Green Book
TDNI was a co-sponsor and supporter of the first edition of the Theatre Green Book in 2021, alongside partners including Theatres Trust and other UK resource organisations. The Theatre Green Book provides practical guidance for making and running theatre more sustainably,.
Green Arts Forum
TDNI also sits on the steering group of Green Arts NI, part of Belfast City Council’s culture forum network.
This forum brings together cultural organisations and practitioners to share learning, encourage action and support environmental awareness across the arts sector.
