The Lyric – Creative Learning Intern

The Lyric Theatre are seeking to offer to a well-motivated, ambitious young person aged 18-24 the chance to share in and learn from the work of a busy and exciting department and play an active role in a variety of theatre-based Education projects.

The role will involve supporting facilitators in their Theatre School workshops, engaging with event planning, as well as working closely with schools to develop a range of resources for pupils and teachers. It will also involve the administration of other projects, currently under development.

Please note that there are no acting or directing opportunities associated with this role.  


Theatre is not a nine-to-five and most of the work in Creative Learning takes place at weekends and in the evenings. Consequently, they are looking for someone who is flexible in their working hours and can offer enthusiasm, stamina and a proactive and imaginative approach.

Good interpersonal, communication and organisational skills are essential for the role.

The appointed Intern will share their commitment to excellence.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate the following:

  1. A keen interest in Theatre and some knowledge of related Education & Outreach work.
  2. Significant experience of participating in theatre-related workshops/courses in school, college or in an extracurricular context.
  3. Significant experience of working with young people in any capacity.
  4. Experience of involvement in coordinating/organising a project or event.
  5. An interest in/experience of using video and audio technology and its applications in theatre.
  6. Competent IT skills and knowledge of Social Media.

The post is based at 55 Ridgeway Street, Belfast, BT9 5FB. The successful applicant may be required to tour with shows/events and in such cases travel expenses will be covered.

30 hours commitment per week is expected, but this would be averaged out across the 6-month period e.g. some weeks might involve 40 hours or more and others much less time to compensate.

Any other part-time employment must be agreed with the Lyric Theatre prior to appointment and not take priority over the availability required for this Internship.

A salary of £246 per week (£8.20 per hour) will be paid. This is based on the average hours worked over the six-month period of the Internship. Should the appointed person leave the post early, the Lyric reserve the right to hold back payment, if hours are owed to the organisation.

2.8 weeks’ holidays will be given (calculated pro rata based on 5.6 weeks for a 12-month period) but these must be taken at specified times plus bank/public holidays. There may be occasions when it is required to work on a public or bank holiday for which a day in lieu will be given. A full induction into the organisation will be provided.

Travel expenses to and from the theatre will not be covered.

The appointment will be subject to a probationary period of 1 month, during which performance will be reviewed and the internship can be terminated at 1 week’s notice. During this time the organisation reserve the right to dismiss the employee for unsatisfactory performance without recourse to the disciplinary procedure.

1 month’s notice will be required should the Intern decide to resign the post.

The role will report to the Head of Creative Learning.
