VAI is delighted to present a series of webinars from invited international speakers. The first in this online series is an event with New York based art writer and critic Paddy Johnson on Reducing our carbon footprint. In this talk Paddy Johnson will discuss the necessity of building socially responsible infrastructure that supports arts workers while minimising the waste that threatens our health, our livelihoods and that of our children. The talk looks at programs with a track record of success and how to replicate them.
Their second event is an Artist Talk with California based Allan deSouza. Allan’s works restage colonial legacies through counter-strategies of humor, fiction, and (mis)translation. Recent projects, Through the Black Country… (2017), and La Vida del Capitan (2019), transpose Henry Stanley’s 1870s African expedition journals to England during the 2016 Brexit vote, and Columbus’ 1492 ship diaries to a 2019 expedition from Oakland to Seville. In this talk titled The Present as an Entanglement of Absences, Allan will address time as hybrid and malleable, and artworks for what they do rather than for what they are.
The third event in this series is a Curator Talk with Claire Gilman. Claire is Chief Curator at The Drawing Center in New York where, over the past eight years, she has overseen the curatorial program, organising more than thirty exhibitions and public programs and authoring nearly as many catalogues. Projects have ranged from first-time museum shows of such artists as Torkwase Dyson, Natalie Frank, and Eddie Martinez, to reconsiderations of the work of established artists like Cecily Brown, Rashid Johnson and Terry Winters, to conceptually-driven group shows. In general, Gilman is committed to an expansive vision of drawing as a mediator between self and world.
