Dance artists working on the island of Ireland are invited to take part in a workshop exploring how dance artists’ embodied experiences of their profession might inform the development of dance strategy and policy.

The project has been developed by Dr Aoife McGrath (QUB) and Dr Victoria Durrer (UCD) in collaboration with Dance Ireland and Theatre and Dance NI and is funded by the Co-Operation with Northern Ireland funding scheme within the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media.

What will you do?

You will view an advance screening of Dance Conversations, a documentary film co-directed by Mary Wycherley and Aoife McGrath in which 3 pairs of dance artists (3 from Northern Ireland and 3 from the Republic of Ireland) reflect on their experiences of working in dance on the island in both movement and conversation.

After viewing the film, workshop participants will be given time to reflect on their experience of the film in both personal, written responses, and collectively, through group discussion.

Why might I consider attending?

The workshops will provide dance artists with an opportunity to join researchers in exploring what experiences are counted in dance work and how they are counted in the ways dance development is supported on the island.

The responses gathered from participants will be used in shaping a final report by Aoife McGrath and Victoria Durrer that will be shared with policymakers, funders and broader dance development organisations and venues.

The workshop is part of a broader research project, ‘Dance Conversations’, which addresses a need articulated by professional dance artists at the Co- Motion Dance Conference in October 2019, and in the March 2021 Dance Think Tanks Report, for collaborative development of North/South creative exchanges and better understanding of the shared living and working conditions of dance artists across the island of Ireland.

Who can apply?

We are looking for professional contemporary dancers / dance artists / choreographers who are currently working on the island of Ireland.
