The Lyric Theatre is proud to share the success of its ongoing commitment to accessibility and inclusion in the arts.

Following the triumph of its first-ever outdoor production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which showcased a range of inclusive, community-led artistic collaborations, the Lyric is continuing this important work with a re-imagined production of Richard III.

Directed by Oisín Kearney, The Tragedy of Richard III (running from 12 October to 10 November 2024) features two actors portraying Richard: Michael Patrick, who has Motor Neurone Disease, and Zak Ford-Williams, who has Cerebral Palsy. Deaf artist Paula Clarke also stars in the production as Tyrell. Thanks to a recent fundraiser, the Lyric has ensured all three performers have full support, including a BSL interpreter, backstage assistance, and fully accessible transport and accommodation.

This production not only reimagines Shakespeare’s famous tale of ambition and betrayal, but also highlights the resilience and complexity of individuals living with disabilities, both on and off the stage. It’s a powerful reflection of Michael Patrick’s own lived experience, portraying Richard as a character grappling with a terminal illness and navigating life with a new disability.

This marks another milestone in the Lyric’s ongoing mission to create an inclusive and accessible theatre environment where all artists can thrive. It is a reminder that equal opportunity and artistic excellence can, and should, go hand in hand.

The Tragedy of Richard III is on at the Lyric from Sat 12 Oct—Sun 10 Nov 2024.
