Churchill Fellowships offer support to UK citizens who wish to carry out research projects that require overseas travel. Funding is awarded to allow Fellows to spend up to two months investigating inspiring practice in other countries, either by travelling overseas or online from the UK, in order to identify new and better ways of tackling a wide range of current challenges facing the UK.

Individual grants are calculated individually, based on the project proposal, destinations to be visited or online learning to be carried out from the UK, and the duration of the overseas learning proposed as part of the Fellowship. The aim is that all the costs related to learning from overseas for up to eight weeks will be fully covered.

The grant covers research-related expenses:

  • Travel research option: economy class return travel to the destination countries, internal travel in the destination countries, food and accommodation for the duration of the applicant’s travels, travel insurance, visas and vaccinations.
  • Online option: financial support to contribute to the costs of carrying out online meetings with individuals and organisations overseas from the UK.
  • Hybrid option: economy class return travel to the destination countries, internal travel in the destination countries, food and accommodation, travel insurance, visas and vaccinations for the duration of the travels overseas and financial support to contribute to the costs associated with carrying out online meetings from the UK with individuals and organisations overseas.
  • Some costs for interpreters, personal assistants and conference attendance may also be covered, on a case-by-case basis.

Up to 140 fellowships are awarded each year.
